Draft guidance on airworthiness-related operational safety objectives for AusSORA

Overview

We are seeking feedback on new draft guidance for airworthiness-related operational safety objectives under the Australian Specific Operational Risk Assessment, or AusSORA.

The Annex A to AC 101-06 supports the broader AusSORA framework.

We previously consulted on guidance covering:

  • airworthiness design standards
  • system safety and reliability
  • adverse environmental conditions.

We are now seeking feedback on the remaining airworthiness-related guidance, covering:

  • OSO #02 manufacturing
  • OSO #03 maintenance
  • OSO #06 C3 link characteristics
  • OSO #07 conformity check
  • OSO #18 flight envelope protection
  • OSO #19 recovery from human error
  • OSO #20 human factors.

This consultation only seeks feedback on this new guidance.

Together, the guidance will help industry understand CASA's expectations and support a consistent approach to demonstrating airworthiness under AusSORA.

Annex A is a deliverable of the RPAS and AAM Strategic Regulatory Roadmap, item AA6 - Publish guidance on the evidence required for RPAS airworthiness and operational safety goals.

Who this consultation is for

This consultation is mainly for:

  • drone designers
  • drone manufacturers
  • system designers and integrators
  • drone operators preparing AusSORA applications
  • consultants supporting AusSORA applications.

The guidance may also help operators understand the information designers and manufacturers may need to support an AusSORA application.

Why your views matter

We want to know whether the new guidance:

  • is clear and easy to use
  • provides enough detail about CASA’s expectations
  • clearly explains the evidence that may be needed
  • supports industry to apply the airworthiness requirements in practice.

Your feedback will help us improve the guidance before we finalise Annex A.

How to submit feedback

Read the draft Annex A before providing your feedback.

Please submit your feedback through the Consultation Hub using the online survey.

If you are unable to provide feedback this way, please email us at regulatoryconsultation@casa.gov.au.

What happens next

At the end of the response period, we will:

  • review all feedback
  • publish responses where permission has been provided
  • publish a Summary of Consultation
  • update the guidance where feedback identifies improvements.

The Summary of Consultation will outline the feedback received, any intended changes and next steps
